Learning French – What To Remember
Many adults already have a vague memory of the French lessons they received at school, and decide at a later date to try to salvage some of their knowledge in order to go on holiday or a business trip. I say “received” for a very good reason – if you’re of a certain age, it’s unlikely that you benefitted from the modern interactive methods of language learning which are readily available online nowadays!
Before you even think about buying a language CD or embarking on an online voyage to trawl for French learning materials, consider some basic tips which may help you to get the most out of your experience.
- Be Realistic – No matter what you may see promised in adverts, most people do not simply acquire an incredible capacity to speak a new language within a few weeks. If you’re pushed for time as you’re due to go on holiday or a business trip, try learning the bits which are most important to you at the time.
- Set Goals – Be clear about what you aim to achieve in the time you have, and don’t forget to treat yourself each time you have reached your target! Why not link this in with a bit of French culture, for example, tucking in to a croissant whilst reading a French newspaper?
- Stick To a Schedule – Try to stick to a schedule to make sure that you really do get the work done – it’s no use investing in a fancy software package you don’t set aside the time to find out what’s on it and how you can benefit from it!
- Find a Group – If the very thought of closing yourself in a room in order to listen to simulated conversations in a foreign language has you tearing your hair out in despair, why not club together with some friends to take a French class, join a French discussion group at the local library or community centre, or even find a French penal online!
- Broaden Your Horizons – French, like any language, is all about people and communication. Link your learning to an aspect of French culture such as the Arts and find out what you can about what’s hot and what’s not at the moment in France! If possible, take the ultimate test by visiting France and trying out your newfound skills in the best learning environment of all.
