Rosetta Stone Sucks
As someone who’s been around the block when it comes to trying out many different methods of learning French, one package I would avoid is Rosetta Stone French.
Rosetta Stone - Brilliant Marketing, Terrible Results
I'm the first to admit the Rosetta Stone has killer marketing - otherwise I wouldn’t have paid so much for their French software! You see Rosetta Stone marketing everywhere - online, in magazines, and even in mall kiosks now. But once you get beyond the marketing hype the Rosetta Stone system leaves a lot to be desired. Here are my problems with Rosetta Stone:
- Rosetta Stone is Slow - At Instant French, we are all about learning French fast. So for that reason we hated Rosetta Stone. The course moves at a snail's pace, Plus, the system teaches you loads of inane phrases like "the dog is white" - when will I ever need to know that?!?!
- Rosetta Stone is Expensive - Compared to other learn French products on the marketing, Rosetta Stone is expensive. I guess they have to cover all that marketing cost somewhere!
- Rosetta Stone is Cookie-Cutter - Rosetta Stone applies the same learning principles to all languages. They figure Japanese is the same to learn as French! The program fails to take into account the unique aspects of learning French.
Speech Recognition
Okay, so I can't say the ALL of Rosetta Stone French sucks. There are some cool features - my favourite being the speech recognition.
My main goal was to learn how to understand and converse with French speakers, so I needed to find a system which could actually monitor the quality of my spoken French and enable me to see how I was getting on. The Rosetta Stone software enabled me to have little competitions with my daughter and friends to see who could get closest to the magic green level on the speech recognition games and activities, looking at or listening to phrases and then repeating them or answering them.
Overall
This will come as no surprise, but I do not recommend Rosetta Stone French!
